Meet Our Chaplains

Master Chaplain Lyle Prather
A graduate of Berean School of the Bible, Lyle was ordained by the Assembly of God in 1981 and began serving as a volunteer Chaplain in 1983.  In 1985 he became the first full-time, paid Chaplain.  Lyle earned a PhD in counseling in 1990 and is a licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselor with the National Christian Counselors Association. He holds memberships in the National Board of Christian Clinical Therapists, International Conference of Police Chaplains, and the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation.

Senior Chaplain Steve White
An ordained Baptist minister, Steve served churches for 24 years and began as a volunteer chaplain with the Longview PD in 2002.  He went full-time as a paid chaplain in July 2003. Steve has extensive training in Critical Incident Stress Management, is “CIT” certified and a member of the International Conference of Police Chaplains, the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation and the NW CISM Network. He remains active in the local church and Ministerial Association.

Volunteer Chaplains
We currently have four ‘volunteer’ Chaplains serving alongside our paid staff.  These men are fully trained and prepared to step in whenever needed throughout the County.  The addition of these dedicated men has increased our ability to respond whenever and wherever and allows our paid staff to have some much deserved time off.  Each volunteer chaplain brings his own unique skills and gifts to the ministry, making for a well balanced team.

HOW YOU CAN HELP!
Each year, in unique and emergency settings, hundreds of people encounter God because a Chaplain came to them in time of need. Our Chaplains are Christian “missionaries” who serve right here in our local area.

While local PD/FD provide some equipment and training, our Chaplains are not employees of any government agencies – they ‘volunteer’ their services.  If it were not for the financial support of individuals, churches and organizations Cowlitz Chaplaincy would not exist. Our Chaplains need your help to continue to fulfill our mission and do what they are trained and gifted to do. Here’s what you can do…

  1.  Pray for our Chaplains by name. Ask God to fill them with strength and wisdom as they minister in the many situations they are called upon to assist with. Ask God to protect them from ‘burn-out’ from having to deal with so much stress in people’s lives.
  2. Your financial support will help underwrite this vital ministry. Your financial gift ensure professionally trained Chaplains are available “24-7” – more importantly, your gifts make a difference in someone’s life! Cowlitz Chaplaincy is a registered “501.c3” non-profit organization and all donations are tax-deductible.

SPECIAL FUND-RAISING OPPORTUNITY:
A couple times during each year we conduct special fundraising activities – the main one being our Annual Breakfast Fundraiser in late April.  This event began as a tribute to our Founder, Sheriff Les Nelson.  For information on this or other fundraiser activities, please contact us.
